You need to be conscious of your fluid intake in the week leading up to the Otter.
Remember that complete hydration starts during the week leading up to the Otter, not just the night before or even during it!
We have seen athletes filling a glass of water with sachets of salt from the local restaurant the night before a race; while this does work to an extent, you ideally need to start this hydration process a few days prior to your event for optimal results. Besides, drinking a few glasses of salted water per day for a week doesn’t sound like our idea of a GUd time!
The Otter is an unpredictable beast when it comes to the prevailing weather conditions on the day, even more so with the Race and Challenge taking place on separate days with a prologue in between For example, last year saw sunny conditions during the Race, but rainy conditions during the Challenge. Taking this into account, ensuring that one is properly hydrated well before the Otter even starts becomes all the more important, no matter which one you partake in.
Enter GU Electrolyte Brew Tablets! Think hydration and most people also think water, rightfully so, as water is your main fluid source, but the mistake many athletes make is taking in solely water to hydrate. Too much water can also be bad for you (leading to hyponatremia) and taking in just water isn’t as effective at retaining fluids, which is where GU Electrolyte Brew Tablets come in. They allow athletes to add electrolytes (320mg of Sodium and 55mg of Potassium per tablet) to their water, thus ensuring that they stay properly hydrated as race day approaches for maximum performance on the day.
GU Electrolyte Brew Tablets come conveniently packaged in re-sealable plastic tubes, each containing 12 individual effervescent tablets. Each tablet mixes with around 500ml of water, so in effect you can mix 6 litres of electrolyte drink per tube. The GU Electrolyte Brew Tablets are also very light in flavour (thus easy to keep drinking before Otter) and are naturally sweetened with a plant based sweetener called Stevia (no artificial nonsense here!) so they contain only 10 calories per tablet.
All you need to do is fill up a bottle with 500ml of water (purchase a water filtering jug for your home and/or office, it’s much kinder on the environment than buying bottled water), drop in a single GU Electrolyte Brew Tablet, let it fizz while keeping the bottle top open and once it has fully dissolved you are GUd to go! We recommend drinking around 3 servings of 500ml each per day in the 3 days leading up to Otter race day to ensure proper hydration and electrolyte loading.
GU Electrolyte Brew Tablets are thus an easy and convenient as well as tasty way to keep hydrated before the Otter, so be sure to use them to your advantage before the event!
Now all you need to do is to do final checks on your gear and get sufficient rest in with your taper.
See you on the start line at the Otter!
The GU Team.
